What does it take to become a Driving Instructor?

The ADI qualification consists of three main stages.

ADI Part 1 – Theory and Hazard Perception

The first stage is the theory and hazard perception test.

You need to develop a good understanding of subjects relevant to driving and driving instruction, as well as being able to recognise developing hazards.

Although you may already have many years of driving experience, there is preparation involved because the test covers knowledge beyond what you would normally need for an everyday driving licence.

ADI Part 2 – Driving Ability

Part 2 is the practical driving test.

This is your opportunity to demonstrate that your driving is at the standard expected of an ADI candidate.

Your everyday driving experience provides the foundation, but preparation is important. Your trainer needs to identify any weaknesses, develop your consistency and help you understand the standard required.

ADI Part 3 – Instructional Ability

Part 3 is different.

You’re no longer being assessed simply on your ability to drive. You need to demonstrate that you can teach someone else to drive effectively and safely.

That means learning how to assess a pupil’s needs, plan a lesson, manage risk, communicate effectively and encourage the pupil to become increasingly independent.

Is becoming a driving instructor right for you?

Qualifying Process to becoming a driving instructor (adi)

The following is a step by step process to becoming a driving instructor. Once you have passed your theory test, you must complete the remaining two stages within two years of passing your part one theory test. Eligibility

You need to 21 years of age or over
You need to have held a full driving licence for at least 3 years - ideally this license should have no points, as this is a serious career choice and your driving history should reflect this

Application

Obtain a Disclosure and Barring Service check to become a driving instructor
Register with DVSA online

Part One Theory Test

Prepare for the multi-choice question and hazard perception tests
Apply for and take the theory test (fee £81)
Qualification must be completed within 2 years of passing Part One

Part Two Driving Test

Prepare for the Part Two advanced driving test
Apply for and take the one-hour test (fee £111)

Part Three Instructing Test

Prepare for the Part Three instructing test (Standards Check)
Gain practical experience teaching on a Trainee Licence* (optional but recommended)

Trainee Licence* - to gain practical experience:

Minimum of 40 hours instructing training to be completed first
Apply for a Trainee Licence (lasts 6 months, fee £140)
Attached to a driving school throughout the 6 months
Extra 20 hours of instructing training needed within the first 3 months
Apply for and take the one-hour Part Three test (fee £111)

Apply for the full ADI licence – lasts 4 years (fee £300)
