What does a driving instructor actually do?

It’s easy to assume that driving instructors simply sit beside learners and tell them what to do.  The reality is much more involved.  A professional driving instructor needs to observe constantly, recognise potential risks and understand what is preventing a pupil from progressing.  You need to decide when to explain something, when to demonstrate it, when to ask a question and when to allow the pupil to work something out independently.  Your job isn’t to create a driver who can follow instructions, it’s to help develop a driver who can make safe decisions independently.

Part 3 preparation helps you develop the skills needed to teach effectively.

These include:

• lesson planning

• client-centred learning

• risk management

• effective communication

• questioning

• feedback

• encouraging pupil independence

These are professional teaching skills, not simply advanced driving techniques.

 

The ADI qualification

Part 1 – Theory and Hazard Perception

Your first stage is the theory and hazard perception test.

Part 2 – Driving Ability

You then need to demonstrate the required standard of practical driving.

Part 3 – Instructional Ability

Finally, you need to demonstrate that you can teach effectively and manage risk appropriately.

Everyone has different training requirements.  Your driving experience, confidence and ability to learn will all influence your progress.  One-to-one coaching allows your trainer to identify what you need to work on and adjust the training accordingly.
