Having lost my job during lockdown, and at an age where finding a similar job would be challenging, I decided to follow in my friends footsteps and become a driving instructor. With Jeremy recently qualified to coach me through the 3 part process, the first challenge was to see how many bad habits I have picked up over the years which was quite revealing but important, as I needed to undo these habits to ensure I would be coaching correctly going forward. I also took the opportunity to sit in on several lessons with Jeremy to observe students of various levels of experience. Running alongside my part 1 reading in preparation for my theory test, Jeremy coached me in preparation for my part 2 practical test which was an extended driving test but would ultimately be the foundation for starting to coach new students. Having passed my parts 1 and 2, and coached by Jeremy the required hours I was ready to start teaching new students. From this point on, it was all about passing the final exam and Jeremy sat in on my lessons to check my technique and provide feedback to help me with the day to day lessons but also to prepare for the part 3 exam. The part 3 exam is quite a tough challenge and Jeremy worked closely with myself to prepare a suitable lesson plan and to also rehearse ahead of the exam. The support from Jeremy is there when you need it and he went the extra mile to ensure that I was prepared for each of the 3 parts.

Having completed my Part 1 & 2 training and the initial Part 3 element, with one of the larger driving instructor training providers I felt something was missing. There was no feeling of support or belonging to something special. I still had no real idea how to ‘teach’ or ‘coach’ a learner driver.  I was aware of L to P Driving School but had no experience of them. I approached Jeremy tentatively to ‘test the water’. He couldn’t have been friendlier or more supportive. We had coffee at a local cafe and immediately hit it off.
I arranged to have some coaching with Jeremy whilst going about the business of setting myself up as an instructor, sourcing a car, dual controls, insurance etc. Over the next few weeks Jeremy also assisted me in obtaining my Trainee Instructor Licence from DVSA.  Once I had made the decision that L to P was the right place for me as a new driving instructor I started building my student base and gaining valuable experience, all under the supportive and watchful eye of Jeremy.  As the weeks turned to months I started to prepare for my Part 3 Instructors exam.... The Big One!! This is where Duncan became a big part of my development too. Having recently gone through the process himself, Duncan became invaluable to me in my preparations.
I truly felt supported and well prepared for my Part 3 test all thanks to Jez and Duncan. I felt like I smashed it when I passed and all 3 of us shared the experience together.
Several months have now passed by and L to P Driving School feels like special place to be!  I would recommend anyone considering becoming a driving coach to contact Jeremy; he will definitely buy the coffees!!! It is a long process made much easier being around positive and supportive colleagues with a shared passion. Thanks gents.
