What makes a good driving instructor?

A good driving instructor needs to understand people as well as driving.

You’ll encounter pupils who:

• need concepts explained in different ways

• become anxious in particular situations

• make the same mistake repeatedly

• need encouragement to become more independent

Your role is to understand what each pupil needs and adapt accordingly.

Learning to communicate effectively.  Knowing something yourself doesn’t necessarily mean you can teach it to somebody else.  During your driving instructor training you’ll need to develop the ability to explain, question, demonstrate and provide feedback without simply taking control of the pupil’s learning.  The aim is to help the pupil understand what they’re doing and increasingly make safe decisions for themselves.

Preparing for the ADI qualification

The qualification is divided into three stages.

Part 1

Theory and hazard perception.

Part 2

Advanced practical driving.

Part 3

Instructional ability.

 

Each stage requires a different type of preparation, which is why a structured training programme is important.

One-to-one ADI coaching

Your previous experience will influence the type of training you need.

Perhaps you’re already an experienced driver but have never taught anyone.

Perhaps you have excellent communication skills but need to develop your driving.

One-to-one coaching lets us concentrate on the areas where you need the most development.
