Your route to becoming an ADI

Qualifying as an Approved Driving Instructor involves three main stages: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Each stage requires a different type of preparation.

Part 1 focuses on your theory knowledge and hazard perception.

Part 2 assesses your practical driving ability.

Part 3 assesses your ability to instruct a learner effectively and safely.

The three stages are important, but they require very different skills.

One of the biggest changes you’ll experience during ADI training is learning to think differently about driving.  As a driver, you’re primarily responsible for your own decisions.  As an instructor, you need to understand what another person is doing, anticipate potential problems and decide how best to help that person improve.  That requires observation, communication and judgement.
